This is another song from my college days. I remember for a long time all I had was that guitar riff--Dm to Am, and the melody. The lyrics came later. I played this one live a lot, solo acoustic, and even though it was just me and a guitar, I could hear this arrangement in my head. So years later when I was looking for a song to record it was fun to do this one and hear it for real.

Lyrics

Bitter St.

Hearts lie on the ground down on Bitter St.
Cold words hit you hard, knock you off your feet
Hard pavement breaks your landing
You’re down and she’s still standing
Pride burns to the ground when you take a chance
Love’s flame slowly cools in a dying dance
Hot passion burns to embers
Love dies but hearts remember

Go, take your heart back home
Leave the past alone down on Bitter St.
And try not to care
Love’s just a word, a line that you heard
A song on the radio when you had her there
When you had her there

Hide out in the shadows on Bitter St.
You know you’ll get burned if you feel the heat
And try not to drop your cover
Cuz one slip and you know it’s over
You’re locked in a cage you refuse to see
There’s no one to blame cuz you hold the key
And this street’s a dead end alley
And you’re just another tally

Go, take your heart back home
Leave the past alone down on Bitter St.
And try not to care
Love’s just a word, a line that you heard
A song on the radio when you had her there
When you had her there

Go, take your heart back home
Leave the past alone down on Bitter St.
And try not to care
Love’s just a word, a line that you heard
A song on the radio when you had her there
When you had her there
Back when you had her
